As the temperature rises, your lips require extra care. Winter chaps and cracks our lips, but summer dehydrates and withers them. The skin of our lips is thin and delicate, and is easily damaged by the sun. Follow these 3 simple steps to keep your lips happy and healthy, even when the temperatures reach the triple digits!
Step 1: Drink Lots of Water
The most important thing you can do in the summer is drink lots of water. Drink! And then drink a little more! Hydration doesn’t always give you plump, moist lips – but dehydration will definitely make your lips dry out.
I try to drink between 6 and 8 cups of water a day. It can be hard drinking all that water, so I like to take this refillable BKR Glass bottle wherever I go. It’s super cute, and both the bottle and the silicone sleeve are dishwasher safe. A lot of plastic bottles are laced with chemicals that seep into the water if they get hot (for example, on a sunny summer day). However, this glass bottle keeps the water fresh and un-contaminated. It holds 2 cups of water, so I try to drink 3-4 bottles worth each day.
Step 2: Use a Hydrating Lip Balm
When our lips get dried out, the first thing we tend to reach for is a Chapstick. However, most chapsticks and balms contain waxes that will actually dry your lips out. EOS was kind enough to send me their new Crystal Balm in Hibiscus Peach, which delivers wax free, paraben & petrolatum free, vegan hydration.
The Hibiscus Peach Crystal Balm smells and tastes amazing, and the packaging is super cute. I love that you can see right through the balm!
The Crystal Balm contains several oils to hydrate your lips:
- Shea Oil: Provides deep hydration + antioxidants
- Avocado Oil: Rich with oleic acid + vitamin E
- Coconut Oil: A deeply penetrating moisturizer
- Castor Oil: Promotes production of elastin and collagen
- Sunflower Seed Oil: Source of essential fatty acids
- Aloe leaf juice: helps keep skin hydrated and firm
I really love that the Crystal Balm feels weightless on my lips; there is none of the greasiness that comes with waxy lip balms.
EOS Crystal Balm comes in Hibiscus Peach and Vanilla Orchard. It only costs $3 at Target and Walmart! Find an EOS retailer near you.
Step 3: Apply A Lip Treatment
I have started applying this Hanalei lip treatment before bed, and I love how soft and smooth my lips are in the morning. It goes on quite thick and feels goopy, but its kukui nut oil and shea butter transform your lips over night. If you want to make your own lip treatment, just mix together a little coconut oil and honey and leave it on your lips for 5-10 minutes.
Just follow those three steps, and you are well on your way to having healthy, hydrated lips this summer season!
