Hello lovelies! Today I’m going to be giving an extremely honest review about the Birchbox makeup subscription box. I was a little hesitant about writing this post, because I know it will come across as seeming very negative. However, I know a lot of you are into makeup subscription boxes; I want to give you a realistic look at Birchbox if you have been thinking about subscribing to it.
“Wow Victoria, what an aggressive title!”, you might be thinking… But this truly sums up how I feel about Birchbox. If you aren’t familiar with the company, Birchbox is a makeup subscription box that costs $10 a month. Upon signing up, you fill out a survey where you answer questions about your skin type, preferences, etc. You can also choose whether you want boxes with mostly makeup, or with mostly skincare. My skin reacts poorly to most skincare products, and I am obsessed with makeup… so guess which box I signed up for? Yep, makeup.
So, I am copying this word for word from the Birchbox website:
You’re able to set your personal preferences in your Beauty or Grooming Profile. We’ll use this to tailor your boxes each month!
You’ll also have a chance to customize your box through Sample Choice and full-size add-ons each month.
Okay, cool. So, upon reading that, you would think that they choose your samples based on your preferences and survey results, right? That it would happen automatically, and you just sit back and receive your awesome, individually tailored boxes, right? Nope. Let’s take a look at what happened to me for the last three months. (Yes, I kept the subscription for 3 months even though I was unsatisfied.. I wanted to write a thorough review!)
Okay, the boxes themselves are pretty darn cute. I love how sturdy and brightly colored they are… So at least they’ve got that going for them. Now, let’s take a look at the contents from those three boxes.
Listen up folks! SKINCARE products are in the pile on the left… MAKEUP products are in the pile on the right. And the three makeup samples I received in three months were terrible.
I received two tiny samples of patchy, poorly pigmented eyeshadow, and one patchy lipstick in an awful applicator. Yes, I know I sound very negative right now.. but it was very upsetting to have the one makeup product in each box be absolute rubbish.
So, after three months of receiving boxes that do NOT meet what I signed up for, I have canceled my subscription. I also did some digging around on the site and found out why the boxes they sent me did not match what they sign up for. You know that exact quote I showed you earlier? Yeah, I dug around some more and it turns out there is more to it.. But you can easily miss what you are supposed to do. On a separate page, I found out that you have a small window of time in which you can choose one individual sample from their “curated’ box. If you pick one, they will give you that sample and the rest of your samples will be based on your preferences. If you do not pick one, you are automatically opted in to their curated box, which is NOT personalized at all. Wow. This would have been great information to include on the “How Can I Customize My Birchbox” page!
I was tempted to give Birchbox one more month, and see what their idea of a personalized box is. However, I honestly don’t want to give this company any more of my money. I know that what happened is partially my fault because I didn’t click around all the pages of the site before subscribing. However, they were very misleading by saying that “you’re able to set your personal preferences in your Beauty or Grooming Profile. We’ll use this to tailor your boxes each month!”, and making it seem like sample choice was just an optional add-on. I don’t want to be automatically opted-in to anything. *sigh*
All of that is why I don’t recommend Birchbox! Who knows though, maybe it will end up working for you. 🙂 I just wanted to put my experience out there. And for now, I’ll just stick with ipsy.
